About the program
Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
The purpose of the project is to generate direct and indirect emission reductions through nitrogen management by individual farmers in Canada. Projects that are implemented according to this protocol generate carbon offsets by switching to an integrated set of Beneficial Nitrogen Management Practices (BMPs) for annual cropping systems.
Nitrous oxide emissions that are quantified using the method defined in NERP depend on three variables and several related emissions factors, namely:
- Total nitrogen applied (as synthetic nitrogen or manure)
- Crop yield
- Field location, which defines the appropriate emission factor to apply related to local soil and climatic conditions
These BMPs manage applied nitrogen (N) sources in a more comprehensive and sophisticated way to reduce N2O emissions associated with nitrogen fertilizer application. They are integrated into a Comprehensive 4R (Right Source at the Right Rate, at the Right Time and in the Right Place) Nitrogen Stewardship Plan.
Farmers stand to generate new revenue from being part of this program. The offsets generated by adopting these protocols will produce a new revenue stream for farmers.
Farmers must live in Canada and implement a 4R crop production plan that has been approved by an Accredited Professional Advisor (APA). Once completed they must, with their agronomist, submit data providing verification of compliance with the plan.
